What Is Idiopathic Hypersomnia (IH)?

IH is a chronic sleep disorder defined by persistent, excessive daytime sleepiness that is not improved by longer sleep duration. Unlike narcolepsy, IH doesn’t involve sudden sleep attacks or REM-related symptoms like cataplexy, hallucinations, or sleep paralysis. People with IH often struggle with severe sleep inertia (difficulty waking), and never feel fully rested, even after long periods of sleep. The cause remains unknown, and diagnosis can be complex.
